INTER/FACE is a weekend-long workshop festival exploring human and computer interfaces through workshops, artist talks and collaborative jams. The festival takes place on NOV 23-24 in Vancouver, BC with workshops in worldbuilding, TouchDesigner, Arduino, sensors, networks and more.
Our workshops are about learning through play. We take care to create environments that are comfortable and safe for exploration and experimentation. We call together participants from different backgrounds to create a dynamic and diverse collaborative energy.
How do we interface with the world? How do we interface with each-other? Exploring the theme of “INTERFACES”, Pia Massie will lead us through a series of world-building exercises that ask us to envision the type of world we want to build, and future we want to live in. The culmination of this workshop will set the landscape for the rest of the weekend, as we realize our collective ideas by building digital and physical interfaces in TouchDesigner, Arduino and more in the proceeding events.
This introductory workshop is ideal for beginners with no prior experience. Participants will learn the basics of the TouchDesigner interface, including key components such as CHOPs, SOPs, TOPs, DATs, and Containers. Attendees will get comfortable with node-based workflows while building a simple interactive project. The workshop will also cover collaboration by sending data over a network and incorporating found footage and material into the project.
A two hour workshop addressing the hidden impact of moral injury in the creative industry, such as idea theft, dismissal, and boundary violations. These experiences can damage trust, creativity, and self-worth, affecting productivity, financial health, and relationships. This session offers a safe space to explore these challenges and provides tools for healing, emotional regulation, and setting boundaries. Attendees will learn strategies to reconnect with their values, advocate for their worth, and align with projects that honor their integrity. Together, we’ll redefine creativity through respect and ethical collaboration.
The Theremin, a unique instrument, traditionally requires intricate assembly, but in this workshop, we’ll simplify the process using an Arduino and sensor. Participants will learn to create and control electronic sounds by hand movement, using an ultrasonic sensor and Touchdesigner to create customizable sounds with accessible code. This workshop will explore integrating Arduino into interactive sound art, focusing on sound creation and manipulation, welcoming both novices and experts to participate.
This hands-on approach allows learners to experiment, make mistakes, and learn in a low-pressure environment. Participants will manipulate physical objects to understand abstract concepts, fostering a deeper understanding of technological principles.
Participants will explore websockets and their role in modern web development. They will learn why websockets are important and how they can be used in conjunction with the other skills learned over the weekend. The workshop will involve sending data across the internet, facilitating real-time collaboration with others.
